Contemporary Band Sampler
(Hardanger and other counted thread stitches)
Level: intermediate to advanced
Pre-homework: Basting

Students will learn 24 different stitches as they work this band sampler that can be either framed, or finished as a bell-pull. Students will have a choice of white/silver, ecru/gold or turquoise/lavender for this piece. Color and fabric selection should be made at time of registration.

The focus will be on the stitches and the textures they create as well as using positive and negative space. The instructor will provide other threads and a doodle cloth for the students to use to see how color can improve or detract from an overall design. Experimentation with various threads and colors is highly encouraged. There are three stitched examples provided, and suggestions are made as to sizes and types of thread that could be used. Tips are given to improve color sense and perfect stitching ability.

Stitches included are:

Kit includes: Full color chart and instructions, 24 count congress cloth or 28 count linen, a variety of cotton, silk and metallic threads in the chosen colorway, (including hand-dyed threads) practice threads, doodle cloth needles and beads. Student should supply: usual stitching materials, extra light or magnification and power strip if needed, good quality scissors with sharp points suitable for Hardanger embroidery, 10- inch scroll bars or 8-inch q-snaps or other means of stretching fabric taut. Stretcher bars would not be suitable for this piece unless the student has chosen the congress cloth option, and then should consider carefully as some of the stitches will be more easily executed by removing from the frame. A laying tool will be helpful for some of the stitches. Students are encouraged to bring threads from their stash to use if they so desire.
